SDC, with our partner Philotechnics, provide identification, removal, remediation, processing and disposal of low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) including mixed and hazardous waste at facilities throughout the world for the Army Joint Munitions Command based out of Rock Island, IL. At Rock Island alone, SDC inspected, inventoried and packaged 9652 radiological items at the MCF to meet Waste Acceptance Criteria at 3 different T&D facilities, manifested and shipped either to SDC Philo LLRW processing facility or directly to a land disposal facility and provided certificates of disposal showing final lawful disposal. Similar projects have been completed at 10 other CONUS sites, with work on-going at other sites.

SDC completed a comprehensive asbestos survey of all the buildings, including research facilities, hangers, storage facilities and office spaces at all three campuses of the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. This involved preparing a detailed sampling plan, conducting the inspections, analyzing the samples and preparing a database to document all of the asbestos at the facility for future abatement purposes.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) used in consumer and industrial manufacturing are persistent in the environment. Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) is one form of PFAS and has been used for fire fighting for numerous applications. SDC has completed multiple projects to remediate and remove AFFF. Work includes inventory of waste on-site, waste characterization, packaging of waste, disposal of waste, clean-up of waste releases, extraction of AFFF from fire protection systems, cleaning/rinsing of AFFF equipment, and proper disposal of AFFF concentrates.
