Clean Out and Abandon in Place of Two 20,000 Gallon Underground Storage Tanks (UST), at Marine Corps Base in Quantico, VA
SDC conducted the in-place abandonment of two 20,000 gallon no. fuel oil underground storage tanks for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) located at the Marine Corps Base Quantico. This work included conducting preclosure, closure and post closure activities. The preclosure activities included: preparing all of the planning documents (e.g., work plan, accident prevention plan, site safety and health plan, quality control plan, environmental/waste management plan); obtaining permit and other regulatory/base approvals; conducting a soil and groundwater investigation and preparing a preclosure assessment of identified releases. Closure activities included removing over 9,000 gallons of no. 6 fuel oil, rinseate, and sludge; conducting confined space entry to clean tanks, demolishing and removing site surface structures including heating coil, tank vaults, piping and valving; and restoring the site with sub-base and gravel and installation of grass seed and straw. Post closure activities included preparing a closure report and waste report to document all site activities, site results, and the appropriate management of waste streams generated from the closure. All work was completed in four months, ahead of schedule, and under budget.
